Our Story

April 1, 1971 was the start of our family’s extraordinary journey in Belizean tourism.

The Dangriga property, Pelican Beach Motel was the vision of HTA Bowman Sr, an active and civic minded citrus farmer and entrepreneur.  The location was a beachfront dancehall outside the northern edge of Stann Creek Town (now known as Dangriga) purchased from Eugene Zabaneh.

“Build it and they will come” was the premise for adding 10 hotel rooms above the dancehall turned lobby, restaurant, bar and offices, with the original owner’s apartment converted to manager’s residence.  HTA Sr even bought a small charter airplane and built an airstrip alongside the hotel to get guests in.  He convinced his son Henry Bowman Jr and his wife Alice to bring their 3 children, Therese, Annie and Henry to spend their school’s annual Easter vacation at the hotel so they could open and then they would find a manager….  This plan never did materialize and Henry and Alice’s move became permanent.

Four generations later, the company’s offerings have expanded exponentially to include over 40 rooms, meeting and event facilities, in two full service locations, Dangriga and the island of South Water Caye; tour operation services and, the logistical management of their tenant – the Smithsonian Institution’s marine research laboratory on the nearby island of Carrie Bow Caye

Pelican Beach Motel now known as Pelican Beach Resorts Ltd was started when there were no accessible hospitality training courses or schools in Belize for either management or staff.  The services developed based on the experience, family recipes, enthusiasm, humility and sheer determination of the first managers Alice and Henry Bowman Jr whose appreciation and respect for community, local cultures, country, and the natural environment served as a guide to establish a solid and reputable business.

The first guests were local businessmen and families, government employees, fishermen, researchers and student groups who travelled “off the beaten path” to adventure in Stann Creek district (now known as Dangriga) – a lesser-known area of Belize than its northern islands.

Over the years the family’s active service in the community included the arenas of education, health, sports, town management, tourism industry leadership, politics and, environmental activism and leadership.

Today the management and staffing, offerings and market has changed and grown as the wants and needs of our guests have, but the foundation of genuine Belizean hospitality with respect and appreciation for local cultures, community and the natural environment is solid.

Alice and Henry created the original product and services with love and a commitment to excellence which extended through the time of their daughter Therese and continues with now the 4th generation managing the properties including Rebecca, Luke and George. Truly a family business over the years hundreds of individuals also with successive generations have been and continue to be a part of the Pelican family.

We look forward to sharing our unique and idyllic locations with you.
