About Dangriga

The name Dangriga loosely translates to “sweet water is close at hand.” This friendly, colorful yet unpretentious town on the Caribbean coast offers a glimpse into the rich heritage of the Garifuna with art, history, music, food and culture.

Established in 1832, thirty years after the descendants of shipwrecked slaves  arrived onshore, Dangriga with a population of some 10,000 has become a cultural hub and home to several pioneers of Belizean music and art.November 19th marks the anniversary of the arrival of the Garifuna people to Belizean shores and every year it is honored with cultural celebrations and re-enactments of that first landing.

Visit vendors selling houseware, clothing, fruits, pastries, and other delicacies, or stop in at the local fish market alongside the river with friendly fishermen offering the fresh catch of the day.

Dangriga is a chance to see Belizeans going about their daily lives untouched by tourism and is a convenient base from which to explore many natural attractions.. let us help you explore it all!
