Pelican Beach Resort
Named in honor of a Garifuna woman who came to Belize with her 13 children, the Gulisi Garifuna Museum in Dangriga, Stann Creek District documents the rich art, music, customs, spiritual beliefs and history of the Garinagu. The Garinagu (plural of Garifuna) are descendants of Africans and Carib Indians of the island of St. Vincent who arrived in southern Belize in 1832. In 2001 UNESCO declared the Garifuna Language, Music and Dance a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible heritage of Humanity.
The museum showcases the arrival of the Garinagu to Belize along with their history and customs. You will be able to hear the beating of the drums, see a full sized working garden of traditional plants and herbs, and experience traditional dancing on special occasions.
