Dangriga’s inhabitants are representative of all Belize’s cultures however, it has one of the largest Garifuna communities in the world. The Garifuna are descendants of African slaves who intermarried with the Carib Indians of South America and originally arrived in Belize in 1823. Each year on November 18th and 19th the town is alive with activity as the culture is celebrated and the first landing of the Garifuna people is re-enacted early in the morning of November 19th.|
In 2003, the United Nation's named the Garifuna culture a 'masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity." The town market, local artists and drum-makers and small farming enterprises present a unique opportunity to experience the art, music, food, culture and, rich spiritual and healing practices of the Garinagu.
